At one time, it was believed that only adults suffered from bipolar disorder. The general consensus at the time was that the condition was set off sometime in the teenage and adolescent years and gradually worsened if left untreated as the kid grew into an adult.

Interestingly, to counter this view, recent years have seen more and more children diagnosed with the condition. Some scientists, researchers, and psychiatrists believe that this is due in some way to improve diagnostic methods, processes and means, while others think it is a stark reality of how many more people really are suffering from bipolar disorder, suggesting some unseen environmental trigger that has spiked the rise.

Whichever of these two schools of thought may be true there is a reality that neither can deny: there are kids – children – with bipolar disorder! Taking statistics from the Archives of General Psychiatry to study mental illness, only 3 percent of children in the United Stated were projected to suffer from bipolar disorder. As at the year 2000, this uncomfortable figure had risen to a more alarming 15 percent! And lest I forget to mention it, this figure continues to climb with each year that passes.

Ok, there is the genetic link that has been proven to be a factor in the cause of bipolar disorder in children. Parents who have suffered from some kind of depression or psychosis are more than likely – about 60 to 70 percent of the time – to birth children with various forms of depressive disorders as well. A good portion of these kids, as you might have surmised at this time, end up with bipolar disorder.

However, you are going to have to agree with me that even the population of the United States is not growing that fast. This points very clearly to some other factor – very likely an environmental factor – that must cause the set of symptoms that lead to bipolar disorder. In other words, more serious research is required to determine what this factor is.

In the meantime, our manic and depressed kids need to be treated; otherwise we would be breeding an entire generation of crazy people who will not hesitate to harm themselves or others. In response to this, there are effective antipsychotic drugs and mood stabilizers that do incredible wonders for children with bipolar disorder. Risperdal, for instance has been shown to yield good results – the FDA only recently approved it. Also, if you can get a prescription for Zyprexa, you may be able to do your bipolar child a lot of good.

Even with these medications, you have to see that your child also gets some psychotherapy so that they can balance out their emotions and learn to handle then along with the other treatments that they are getting.

If you do not learn to take charge of the disease, the disease will take charge of you. I don’t have to have said that in regard to any particular disease; it is true about every disease under the sun. However the stark reality of it in relation to bipolar disorder is such that if you are able to stare it in the face, you’d never be able to deny the truth.

Up to fifteen percent of people who suffer from bipolar disorder commit suicide at some time during the course of their suffering. Of those that are left, close to half actually contemplate it, and some have tried to kill themselves too. You have got to admit it; bipolar disorder is not a condition that you want to be too lenient with.

Realizing that, another hurtful truth is that conventional medicine really does not have all the answers to this condition. There is psychotherapy that actually does help treat bipolar disorder, but it is hardly enough. There are also lithium medications that consist of mood stabilizers lithium carbonate and lithium citrate, natural mineral salts that help to control both the mania and the depression of bipolar disorder. However, they have side effects of virtually destroying your kidneys after you have used them for too long. Even during medication, lithium can cause you severe insomnia, loss of appetite, increased thirst and urination, and a number of other things you may not like.

If you decided to go the way of valproate and carbamezapine, you’d be better able to deal with the mania, but you will have no defense against the depression of your set of symptoms because they only can help to dampen your severe manic episodes. You may have heard of Depakene and Tegretol; those are their respective trade names. Traditional antidepressants also are no good for dealing with bipolar disorder because they’ll more than likely trigger manic episodes or worsen your bipolar disorder by causing you to suffer the rapid-cycling nature of the disease.

The first natural cure for bipolar disorder is learning to control your thinking. It may have a strong genetic influence, but bipolar disorder boils down simply to your thought process getting out of hand. What you need to do is to become acutely aware of your thought process so that it does not drag you around at will anymore. Once you know the thoughts that often send you off on a spin, learn to avoid them and focus instead on things that are bright, breezy and positive. Did I mention possible?

Enhancing your energy and elevating your mood is definitely an option for dealing with bipolar disorder. To do that, you need a healthier diet than what you are already consuming. You may want to start with a diet detox; cease to eat what you are eating now and eat nothing but vegs for a week. When you return, start to take a whole lot more water, more vitamins, and a whole lot less carbohydrates and heavy calorie stuff.

Finally, the balance you need to help deal with your bipolar disorder is to be found on exercise. Listen; there cannot be any compromising here. If you are going to heal and stay healed of bipolar disorder, you cannot be too carefree about your exercise regimen. Days that you don’t work out may generally spoil the entire program. It’s not a lot of options, but keep these three up, and you will find one day that you have not even had a manic or depressive spell for years.

Your past and present experiences are critical to your bipolar disorder treatment. Once you have been diagnosed, the specialist will like to ask you what you life looks like at the moment. You want to answer them in detail too. It is very essential that they do not make a misdiagnosis and end up prescribing you the wrong treatment.

Family members and friends should help when you are being given your bipolar disorder treatment. You may have to stay in hospital for a certain length of time, or you may be allowed to go home for that time. Whichever it is, they have to provide the support you need to pull through such difficult times.

Helpful insights into your behavior when you suffer from bipolar disorder are totally critical to the treatment that you get for the syndrome. So, if you are not the person telling the entire story, you may want to bring a sibling along with you to the doctor’s. What you may not remember, they may not have forgotten.

When you are a teen suffering from bipolar disorder, you must understand that the treatment for your condition may not be the same as that of the other guy. After all, your body and mental chemistries both take different directions. You want to see that you listen for yours and not for what they have prescribed for the adult.

Sometimes a bipolar disorder diagnosis may require a medical exam to rule out other conditions. This is most common when a teenager is to be diagnosed. Because there are a host of other conditions that resemble bipolar disorder, they want to be careful to make no mistakes. Treatment has got to be on point.

Medication and psychotherapy are known bipolar disorder treatments that are effective in how well they help sufferers of the condition. If you know of any place you can get the treatment, walk in and let them know that you fear you suffer from the condition. Even if it is not the specialist attending to you, they should know to point you in the right direction.

When you suffer from bipolar disorder, if is easy to want to end it all because you can no longer see the meaning to life. When you feel like this, you have to see that your physician knows about it. If they are going to adequately treat your condition, they have to know these things. It’s for your own good.

You had better believe that bipolar disorder is a manageable condition, and one with which an unknown number of Americans live with day in and day out. And I daresay, if there are people who can live fulfilling and successful lives in spite of this horrible condition, you can too. So get off of your behind now and go get it.

It is possible that you are not aware of ways on how to cure bipolar disorder. Why, the cure doesn’t even exist yet. But you should know already of effective management procedures that exist for it you suffer from the disease. If you don’t, you had better start to look for them already, because it can only take so long before the disease takes over, and you don’t want that.

Many bipolar disorder treatments and medications target on preventing the recurrence of your manic and depressive episodes because they really don’t know how to cure it just yet. You do have to see that you know how they work though, so that you don’t apply them wrongly. If you are going to beat the disease, you have to stay sharp.

Bipolar disorder is a mental disease that fluctuates you between enthusiasm and obsession, desperate gloominess. And as though these two aren’t horrible enough on their own, bipolar disorder may choose from time to time to mix them both up in your mind. Why else do you think so many people decide to call it quits midway between?

Your mixed bipolar disorder episodes aren’t like a relief or a balance for the symptoms of the disease. Actually, they are periods of rapid cycling of the two far poles that characterize it, but a third party layman may not know that. What they see is just you freaking out, and before long they freak out themselves.

You cannot – or should not – try to treat bipolar disorder use the standard antidepressant. That could just send you into the manic phase of the condition in a very short time. The same works in the other direction. The standard mania medications may just put you in a horrid depression. That’s why there must be a medication that balances both properties.

There are all kinds of medications that treat acute manic-depressive illness, but they are not drugs that you can get on your own. As a matter of fact, most medical professionals in the field dislike prescribing and having you go buy them, and instead would rather administer them to you by themselves.
