At one time, it was believed that only adults suffered from bipolar disorder. The general consensus at the time was that the condition was set off sometime in the teenage and adolescent years and gradually worsened if left untreated as the kid grew into an adult.

Interestingly, to counter this view, recent years have seen more and more children diagnosed with the condition. Some scientists, researchers, and psychiatrists believe that this is due in some way to improve diagnostic methods, processes and means, while others think it is a stark reality of how many more people really are suffering from bipolar disorder, suggesting some unseen environmental trigger that has spiked the rise.

Whichever of these two schools of thought may be true there is a reality that neither can deny: there are kids – children – with bipolar disorder! Taking statistics from the Archives of General Psychiatry to study mental illness, only 3 percent of children in the United Stated were projected to suffer from bipolar disorder. As at the year 2000, this uncomfortable figure had risen to a more alarming 15 percent! And lest I forget to mention it, this figure continues to climb with each year that passes.

Ok, there is the genetic link that has been proven to be a factor in the cause of bipolar disorder in children. Parents who have suffered from some kind of depression or psychosis are more than likely – about 60 to 70 percent of the time – to birth children with various forms of depressive disorders as well. A good portion of these kids, as you might have surmised at this time, end up with bipolar disorder.

However, you are going to have to agree with me that even the population of the United States is not growing that fast. This points very clearly to some other factor – very likely an environmental factor – that must cause the set of symptoms that lead to bipolar disorder. In other words, more serious research is required to determine what this factor is.

In the meantime, our manic and depressed kids need to be treated; otherwise we would be breeding an entire generation of crazy people who will not hesitate to harm themselves or others. In response to this, there are effective antipsychotic drugs and mood stabilizers that do incredible wonders for children with bipolar disorder. Risperdal, for instance has been shown to yield good results – the FDA only recently approved it. Also, if you can get a prescription for Zyprexa, you may be able to do your bipolar child a lot of good.

Even with these medications, you have to see that your child also gets some psychotherapy so that they can balance out their emotions and learn to handle then along with the other treatments that they are getting.

There are times when the symptoms of bipolar disorder are so quick upon you that you tend to have little or no normal functioning in between the varied episodes or phases of the condition. The only way to keep something like this in check is to be able to catch and address these symptoms with care at their onset, or you will miss them… and pay for it.

It is not very often that swings between mania and depression occur over a period of days for a sufferer of bipolar disorder, but it does happen. Those are perhaps the easiest case of the disease to diagnose because the symptoms of both extremes of it are so glaring and contrasting. Then treatment can be quickly sought.

You have to understand bipolar disorder; otherwise you will never be able to deal with it the way it needs to be deal with. And it does not matter that you are the patient or their friend; what counts it that you are involved. Whatever it costs you, learn about the symptoms of it, and see that you are able to take a helping stand as the crises set in.

The main symptoms of bipolar disorder are the mania and the depression that take you over one after the other in often lengthy intervals. Be careful you do not mistake them for your personality traits because then you would hurt yourself and think that everything is ok, which they are not.

Sometimes, bipolar disorder does not come in the conventional way. Sometimes, you may experience a major depression from time to time and then simple or hypo manic episodes in between. In some other instances, the reverse is the case. You should know that one is no less deadly than the other, so deal with them appropriately.

Episodes of a milder mania than the depressive state of the disease are often associated with certain forms of bipolar disorder. When this happens, you may spend long terms feeling useless about yourself and about life, and shorter whiles feeling excited about everything. It is still bipolar disorder, and it still has to be addressed aggressively.

There is a type of bipolar disorder called cyclothymic disorder. This is the form of the manic-depressive illness that is characterized by mood alternates between mild depression and mild mania. It does not seem to be too severe, so few people take serious not of it, either in themselves or in others. But it can get a lot worse.

Bipolar disorder has been known to follow a seasonal pattern on occasion. You feeling bright and breezy all throughout spring and summer, and feeling wretched all through winter characterize this kind of the disease. As a matter of fact, it is not too rare in the United States today, so watch out for it in your loved ones.

Not every bipolar disorder patient shows the same patterns of behavior when they suffer from the condition. Not all of them suffer in the same way either. Some are seasonal and some are rapid cycling. You certainly cannot treat them all in the same way. The bipolar disorder treatment you must use must go along with the nature of your suffering, and nothing less.

Adults who have bipolar disorder are often the ones who commit or attempt suicides the most. I suppose the reason for that is that they have more to worry about, so that when they are in the depressed phase of the condition, they really cannot find any way out. Without treatment, a good number of them will never make it.

Bipolar disorder is like a lot of other similar conditions such as major depression and mania. As a matter of fact, it blends the two of them to an interesting degree. In finding a befitting treatment for your condition, some doctors may find that they need to combine some of the treatments they have for the others.

There are quite a few mental health professionals out there all over the United States who specialize specifically in bipolar disorder because it is a rather interesting condition, and one that posses its own challenges. You should have no trouble finding a professional to help your kid with the treatment they so badly need.

They may have to observe your behavior carefully before making a diagnosis for bipolar disorder. More than that that, they still have to watch you are closely as possible before deciding on the treatment for you. You need to grasp that bipolar disorder is not like some regular disease for which you take drugs. It’s a mental condition, and more care is needed.

For the treatment of bipolar disorder, you may be asked to stay in hospital for a while and mix with certain types of people. This is similar to the way they treat manic depression, but it isn’t quite the same. You do want to comply though, because more than just your health – your actual life is at stake here.

They need a complete history of your life when they are trying to diagnose you for bipolar disorder. Treatment can come appropriately for the condition in no other way. They need to know what your past was like so that they can perhaps identify the most likely triggers of your condition. Then they can better treat you.

There are a lot of people suffering from bipolar disorder in the United States today, and the numbers keep rising. The condition is very dangerous because it has you switching back and forth between extreme moods in a way that you cannot control by yourself, and in a way that could lead you to harm yourself or someone around you whom you love or who loves you.

Treating bipolar disorder these days is also getting easier than it used to be at one time. However, before any psychologist or psychiatrist ever embarks on treating a patient, they have to diagnose the condition properly first. You see, bipolar disorder is just one of many other psychotic conditions that are known to severely affect your personality. If a lot of care and attention is not taken, you could be misdiagnosed, and you could end up worse off than you are because you got the wrong treatment or medication for your set of symptoms.

Added to the foregoing, you have to realize that some bipolar disorder medications have side effects that could be harmful. A careless or carefree diagnosis may worsen your condition if you were suddenly and needlessly to be exposed to the side effects of one of the drugs that are used to bipolar disorder.

Let us take a look at lithium therapy, for instance. The substance lithium carbonate has been proven and used for a long time to treat patients suffering from bipolar disorder. It has the effect of shortening or delaying both the manic and the depressive episodes of bipolar disorder. This medication takes only about two or three weeks to become effective, but you are going to have to be taking it as directed by the physician for that duration. Also, you must see to it that you take your lithium treatment at a time when you are ‘normal’ on your manic-depressive scale. This way, you may never get the mania or the depression.

Catch time: lithium has side effects. Lithium carbonate causes increased thirst in several bipolar patients, and nausea. Into the bargain, you may have to deal with increased urination, vertigo and lightheadedness, muscle weakness, and loss of appetite. Worse still, after prolonged use of lithium carbonate as medication for bipolar disorder, you could end up with kidney damage.

With all of these, it becomes risky to consider lithium carbonate therapy as treatment for bipolar disorder in children. However, after a few tests, the doctor may consider it safe to commence with the treatment. If the child’s kidneys are in particularly good condition, there may not be that much harm done.

Lithium has been used in the treatment of bipolar disorder since the middle of the last century. In particular, lithium carbonate and lithium citrate are well known mood stabilizers that can help to alter the rhythmic cycling of the brain. If the doctor says it is ok, you had better believe it.

You will do well to learn all the symptoms of bipolar disorder that you can get your hands on. Must people who suffer from it are not even aware that they do and you may be the person to be able to tell them the truth. If you don’t have a clue yourself, then you both are doomed to live life as the disease deems fit to bestow upon you.

Recognizing the presence of the abnormality called bipolar disorder is important to everyone involved. That would be the sufferer, the doctor treating them, the friends of the sufferer, and their family as well. When you are able to tell that diseases is there, then you will know to do the things that you need to do to see that it does not get worse.

Bipolar disorder is a significant disease in the United States today because growing numbers of people continue to suffer from it each passing year. The reason why is not immediately apparent, but one has got to suppose that it must have something to do with the growing population. Even though this seems improbably, learning more about the condition may prove to you otherwise.

Because the cycles of opposing characteristics that depict bipolar disorder take a long time to complete, and are often far apart, a lot of people do not know that they suffer from the condition. Even people close to them may just think their situations to be moods and think no more of it. Little wonder the casualty rate of the disease is so high.

It may be difficult to diagnose bipolar disorder, but it is far from impossible. More than merely observing the potential patient physically, you can have them monitored mechanically as well to determine if they have the disease. However, diagnosis would be impossible to complete without background information on them. Be informed.

The behavioral manifestations that distinguish bipolar disorder from other mental diseases are not always immediately apparent because this is one psychological disease that tends to have the best – or worst – of both worlds. It has the manic phase, and the depressive phase, and you could be misdiagnosed for either.

It is easy to misunderstand bipolar disorder because at one time the sufferer may be very excited and all that about life, and at another time, they may be down in the dumps for no reason at all. You may have to see the worst of both conditions before you begin to think that your friend is suffering, so the moment you think something is wrong, start watching closely.

Before embarking on any bipolar disorder treatment, you should see first that you are properly diagnosed. A series of tests may be in order to determine the extent of your suffering, or how long it has been on. When these are in place, you will get your treatment, but not likely before.

You first need to have your bipolar disorder condition diagnosed by a known professional in these mental or psychological diseases. I know how you must fear being one of ‘those people’ who suffer from these things, but it is more important that you find it and treat it before it treats you.

The disorder known as bipolar is not a rare one in the United States. As a matter of fact, evidence suggests that most people suffer from it, however briefly, at some point in their lives, usually at their coming of age. As a consequence, you must understand that bipolar disorder treatments are not scarce and can be applied quite effectively. You know you can trust the doctor to help you with it.

One danger you don’t want to expose yourself to with a possible bipolar disorder conditions is a failure to have it properly diagnosed. It is difficult enough to establish even with your cooperation. Without it, you are asking for trouble, and you never may get the treatment that you so badly need, which will be a shame because you could end up committing suicide.

Bipolar disorder is a psychological syndrome that you want to treat in a hurry before it proves fatal to you. You had better believe that some of the best minds in this country’s history have lost their lives to it. You may not be in their league – you may even be above it – but you don’t want to go without the treatment of it because you could die too.

It is no strange thing to have patients of bipolar disorder end up committed in a psychiatric hospital because they did not get proper treatment. As matter of fact, it is not strange thing to have them end up dead by their own hands because they did not get treated. You don’t want that to happen to you, do you? You want to get treated already for it. So get right to it.

Undiagnosed bipolar disorder is one of the chief causes of deaths by the syndrome. You know how it is; without the diagnosis, there is no way you can get on the much-needed treatment that will help you; you don’t even know that you should. In the end, you will find things get out of hand a bit too often, and the very next time may be the last.

If you have been told once, you have been told a million times: bipolar disorder is one serious medical condition that you don’t want to trifle with. Do not get the wrong impression; it can be treated, and rather well too. But the hard part is adequately diagnosing it. That is why specialists are often very careful when it comes to that.

There are mental illnesses and there are mental illnesses. And then, there are mental illnesses like bipolar disorder in a whole different class of their own. I mean, when you have a disease that combines perhaps every other disease on the disease spectrum, you have got to show some respect. Bipolar disorder is that kind of disease.

Bipolar disorder is not called manic-depressive illness for nothing. The reason why is that it takes you on a roller coaster ride through a realm of mania for what is usually a long while, to the far opposing pole of depression, usually for a long while too. And if you complete the journey and you are still alive, it takes you all over again. Not very pleasant I must add.

With the right treatment you can certainly take care of your bipolar disorder. As a matter of fact, there are several Americans in and around where you live who must have the disease, and you don’t have a clue of it. That is how I know you can get the help you need to. It is time to stop running already.

Even with bipolar disorder you can lead a very fulfilling life. Sincerely speaking, it is not even a hard thing to achieve, but it is an involving one. Take the fact that certain of its treatments have profound and unpleasant side effects, for instance. It may make living with the condition difficult, but certainly not impossible.

When you have a disease like bipolar disorder, you must understand that curing it will be a big deal. In simple terms, there really isn’t a known cure for the syndrome as yet, but there are several treatments and medications you can take that can help you live relatively comfortably with the disease. You may want to learn about and try them out.

You are best treated for bipolar disorder by a reputable psychiatrist who knows what they are doing. And if you have trouble finding a good psychiatrist in your region, you can settle for a reputable psychologist as well. Certainly by the time you have run through your long list of shrinks you have to have found one to help.

There are all kinds of things that cause people to suffer from depression in the world around you, and it is a fact the United States has more than its fair share of them. They cause all kinds of depression too. Sometimes they cause clinical depression, other times major depression, sometimes manic-depression, and then bipolar depression disorder.

In the attempt to diagnose bipolar depression disorder, the specialist has to go through a series of processes. Often they begin by examining the symptoms of depression that are present in you at the moment, and then they go on to take a look at your history to see if they have always been there. You, the patient, are going to have to cooperate.

If you have had bipolar depression disorder since you were a child, the symptoms will always have been there. However, it is entirely possible that you don’t even know it because your friends and family may put them down as some kinds of personality traits. As a result, it had the chance to develop into what it is now.

There is such a thing as a simple depression without it ever getting to be a severe form of the condition. All human beings at one time or the other tend to slip into depression from time to time over basic life’s challenges. However, the frequency of these occurrences and their intensity may be what depict it as bipolar depression disorder.

You will do well to not mistake bipolar depression disorder for bipolar disorder. They may be similar, but they are not diagnosed the same way or treated likewise. It is not like you will be able to tell them apart by yourself though; you are going to have to let the professionals do their thing. Your responsibility is to see that you give them an accurate history.

You don’t get proper treatment for bipolar depression disorder unless you have a psychiatrist who really knows what they are doing. The chances are that in your condition, you may not know well enough to seek the help you need, but a friend or family member can help, so try to see to it that they do.

Your shrink may have to establish the difference between the bipolar depression disorder that you suffer from, and actual bipolar disorder. The reason is so that you understand how your suffering differs from that of other patients, and why you need different medications. You wouldn’t want to end up worsening your condition inadvertently, would you?

Whatever else it is that you know of bipolar disorder, you may never forget that it is also a psychological condition, and so it has to be attended to psychologically too.

There are a lot of medications that can be used in the treatment of bipolar disorder, but there are no guarantees that they will cure the syndrome. A lot of bipolar patients have been through various treatments for the disease and have all come out with varying results. However, the results are not discouraging either.

Treating bipolar disorder requires first a proper diagnosis by a qualified professional such as a psychologist or a psychiatrist. Even if you have read all about the symptoms of bipolar disorder online and you have known how to treat it, you must remember that you are not a professional at this. Let the pros handle it.

So it could be you, or it could be a loved one, but once you have been properly diagnosed for bipolar disorder and categorized as to which type of the condition you are suffering from, you may now begin to undergo the treatment for it.

As long as you do not have kidney problems, your physician will likely prescribe you lithium because of its soothing properties on your moods. This will help you shorten, delay, or even prevent the extreme moods that may trigger your spells or episodes of bipolar disorder. Be sure you get a prescription for this though, because there are side effects that you need to be aware of.

There are other medications you may use for the treatment of bipolar disorder as well, especially for handling the manic phase of the condition. Carbamazepine is one very good example, and Valproate is another. They are sold in the United States under the trade names Tegretol and Depakene respectively. They dampen the mania so that you do not get off and harm yourself.

If your suffering from bipolar disorder is severe – either in mania or depression, you may have to be subjected to electro convulsive therapy. Often reserved for the most extreme of cases, ECT is not exactly a medication for bipolar disorder, as it is a treatment for people suffering extreme episodes or who are not responding positively to the medications and other treatments. ECT does help a great deal with reducing mood stability and cycling, which will help other medications to work more appropriately.

With all of these medications for treating the disease, you may also have to deal with some psychiatric therapy to help analyze your mind and set it back on the right track. Whatever else you think, this is critical to your chances of regaining the control of your mind that you have lost to bipolar disorder.

If you are interested in seeing the statistics of bipolar disorder diagnosed in the United States over the past several years, you may want to take a peek into the Archives of General Psychiatry. We should have records after all that make research easy so that new facts can be dug up about such conditions when they are needed.

In the attempt to diagnose bipolar disorder, your psychiatrist will ask you series of searching questions, some of which you may not consider to be relevant. This is why it is critical that you are working with a psychiatrist that you trust, because when they ask these questions, you have to be able to answer them still without fear or doubt.

A bipolar disorder diagnosis is not something you want to do or get over the Internet. Sure there are websites that make it easy enough all over the internet at this time, but they lack the personal touch of direct contact between doctor and patient that is required for accuracy of diagnosis and best effects. Try to get your diagnosis in person.

The proportion of children in America that were diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1990 was less than 3 percent. I wouldn’t want to cause you much alarm by revealing the current proportion as at this time, but I can tell you simply that it has grown more than fivefold. Cause for alarm? I wouldn’t know; but I would wait for the pros to tell us.

At one time, even the pros – the psychologist and psychiatrists in the bipolar field did not think much of the disease. Sure a lot of adults suffered, but if you can catch it early enough, you may be able to help them. However, better diagnostic means have shown that bipolar disorder is not that rare in kids. That means there is more work to be done.

The diagnosis of bipolar disorder has improved a lot since the disease was first discovered in earlier centuries. Today, psychopharmacology clinics have discovered a steep increase in prescriptions of antipsychotic drugs to children of all ages. This proves that not only is the condition more widespread than before, but too many more kids are suffering too.

The constantly increasing diagnoses of bipolar disorder in the nation today suggest that either the treatments are not working so well for treating the condition, or the causes as triggers for the disease are on the rise in the country at this time. Either way, it calls for more awareness among people so that they can watch out for this potential killer.

If you pay attention to history, you will find a pattern of bipolar disorder amongst some of the greatest minds that ever lived, which suggests that this ‘Fine Madness’ actually is a precursor or a resultant to greatness and creativity. Many question the accuracy of such diagnoses though, due to the unavailability of the test subjects.
