Are you trying to make a diagnosis of bipolar disorder? If so, you need to know what bipolar disorder test you should be going for.

For a start, there are a few ways you can get a diagnosis. You can do it through a professional diagnosis or a self-questionnaire. Before you make your choice, do note that bipolar disorder can be difficult to diagnose.

In fact, it has been estimated at up to 70% of patients with bipolar disorder has gotten at least one inccurate psychiatric assessment. Sometimes the time between the appearance of the first symptoms and the time an accurate diagnosis is received can take more than ten years.

It is not easy to diagnose bipolar disorder as it is easily mistaken as depression. The mania and hypomania are often overlooked as just ordinary emotions. Other common misdiagnoses include schizoaffective disorder and schizophrenia.

That said, it also means that while you can use questionnaires and screening tools, you should not rely on it alone to make a diagnosis. These tools can be found easily online and they merely help to rule in or out whether someone has the likelihood of the illness.

At this time, you may be wondering if there is a lab test that can determine if one has bipolar disorder. Unfortunately the answer is no. While there has been active research on bipolar disorder, there is presently no lab test to do that. Of course, things may change as there are many exciting advances in the field of brain research.

There is definitely bipolar disorder test you can make use of but do note that getting an accurate diagnosis is important so do seek professional medical help if you are unsure.

Is there such a thing as bipolar schizophrenia? Before we answer that question, let us take a look at what medical research has thrown up over the last few years.

For many years, medical experts have always classified bipolar disorder and schizophrenia as two distinct mental disorders. In fact, many psychiatrists still have the practice of separating bipolar disorder and schizophrenia even up to today.

However, to a person on the street, when you consider the symptoms of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, the distinctions are blurred and it is indeed very difficult to tell the differences from one another. Even psychiatrists often misdiagnose.

The diagnosis of bipolar disorder, like many other medical condition, involves systematically ruling out other conditions that can imitate it. There are certainly many conditions that can look a bit or a alot like bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder describes patterns of abnormal and servere mood swings, ranging from disabling depression to mania while schizophrenia covers a broad range of disorders that are a combination of psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions and thought disorganization.

In both cases, patients can display the lack of apathy and motivation. There is even an illness known as schizoaffective disorder where the patient has mood swings episodes that fall under the diagnosis of bipolar disorder and symptoms of schizophrenia that persists after the mood episode is over.

A recent study has found the link between bipolar and schizophrenia. If schizophrenia has been running in a family, there is a high possibility that bipolar disorder will run in there too. This suggests that both disorders may be caused by the same genes.

This means that psychiatrists should not be viewing these disorders separately anymore. While bipolar schizophrenia may still exist as separate entities, it goes to show that it is still best to leave the diagnosis to the professionals.

Bipolar disorder causes are said to have come from many sources. However, not all is true. One of the main causes of this mental illness that we could verify is the genes. There has been a strong link between the illness and the genes.

In fact, it has been found that the closer you are related to the person who has the disorder, the more likely you are to develop it. That also means that your chance of developing it decreases the more distantly related you are.

However, it does not mean that you will necessarily develop the disorder if someone in the family has it. While it will most likely run in the family, it can also happen in people without any family history. It appears that genetic can only offer part of the answer.

Scientists have pinned down the genes causing bipolar disorder to chromosomes 22 and 13. If you really want to know, schizophrenia is also attributed to the same genes. Presently, there is no tests that can tell who will or who will not develop bipolar.

That said, if you believe you have a higher risk for developing bipolar, you should make efforts to keep away from drugs, alcohol and undue stress. This is because other factors like environment, drugs and stress can also come into the picture.

Drugs, for example, have been known to cause symptoms of bipolar disorder. Stimulants can set off a manic episode while drugs like cocaine can trigger off mania or even depression. Studies have shown that people who are already predisposed to such disorder may trigger off these psychotic symptoms unknowingly.

Now that you know what are some likely bipolar disorder causes, it would do you alot of good to know more about bipolar disorder.

At one time, it was believed that only adults suffered from bipolar disorder. The general consensus at the time was that the condition was set off sometime in the teenage and adolescent years and gradually worsened if left untreated as the kid grew into an adult.

Interestingly, to counter this view, recent years have seen more and more children diagnosed with the condition. Some scientists, researchers, and psychiatrists believe that this is due in some way to improve diagnostic methods, processes and means, while others think it is a stark reality of how many more people really are suffering from bipolar disorder, suggesting some unseen environmental trigger that has spiked the rise.

Whichever of these two schools of thought may be true there is a reality that neither can deny: there are kids – children – with bipolar disorder! Taking statistics from the Archives of General Psychiatry to study mental illness, only 3 percent of children in the United Stated were projected to suffer from bipolar disorder. As at the year 2000, this uncomfortable figure had risen to a more alarming 15 percent! And lest I forget to mention it, this figure continues to climb with each year that passes.

Ok, there is the genetic link that has been proven to be a factor in the cause of bipolar disorder in children. Parents who have suffered from some kind of depression or psychosis are more than likely – about 60 to 70 percent of the time – to birth children with various forms of depressive disorders as well. A good portion of these kids, as you might have surmised at this time, end up with bipolar disorder.

However, you are going to have to agree with me that even the population of the United States is not growing that fast. This points very clearly to some other factor – very likely an environmental factor – that must cause the set of symptoms that lead to bipolar disorder. In other words, more serious research is required to determine what this factor is.

In the meantime, our manic and depressed kids need to be treated; otherwise we would be breeding an entire generation of crazy people who will not hesitate to harm themselves or others. In response to this, there are effective antipsychotic drugs and mood stabilizers that do incredible wonders for children with bipolar disorder. Risperdal, for instance has been shown to yield good results – the FDA only recently approved it. Also, if you can get a prescription for Zyprexa, you may be able to do your bipolar child a lot of good.

Even with these medications, you have to see that your child also gets some psychotherapy so that they can balance out their emotions and learn to handle then along with the other treatments that they are getting.

If you do not learn to take charge of the disease, the disease will take charge of you. I don’t have to have said that in regard to any particular disease; it is true about every disease under the sun. However the stark reality of it in relation to bipolar disorder is such that if you are able to stare it in the face, you’d never be able to deny the truth.

Up to fifteen percent of people who suffer from bipolar disorder commit suicide at some time during the course of their suffering. Of those that are left, close to half actually contemplate it, and some have tried to kill themselves too. You have got to admit it; bipolar disorder is not a condition that you want to be too lenient with.

Realizing that, another hurtful truth is that conventional medicine really does not have all the answers to this condition. There is psychotherapy that actually does help treat bipolar disorder, but it is hardly enough. There are also lithium medications that consist of mood stabilizers lithium carbonate and lithium citrate, natural mineral salts that help to control both the mania and the depression of bipolar disorder. However, they have side effects of virtually destroying your kidneys after you have used them for too long. Even during medication, lithium can cause you severe insomnia, loss of appetite, increased thirst and urination, and a number of other things you may not like.

If you decided to go the way of valproate and carbamezapine, you’d be better able to deal with the mania, but you will have no defense against the depression of your set of symptoms because they only can help to dampen your severe manic episodes. You may have heard of Depakene and Tegretol; those are their respective trade names. Traditional antidepressants also are no good for dealing with bipolar disorder because they’ll more than likely trigger manic episodes or worsen your bipolar disorder by causing you to suffer the rapid-cycling nature of the disease.

The first natural cure for bipolar disorder is learning to control your thinking. It may have a strong genetic influence, but bipolar disorder boils down simply to your thought process getting out of hand. What you need to do is to become acutely aware of your thought process so that it does not drag you around at will anymore. Once you know the thoughts that often send you off on a spin, learn to avoid them and focus instead on things that are bright, breezy and positive. Did I mention possible?

Enhancing your energy and elevating your mood is definitely an option for dealing with bipolar disorder. To do that, you need a healthier diet than what you are already consuming. You may want to start with a diet detox; cease to eat what you are eating now and eat nothing but vegs for a week. When you return, start to take a whole lot more water, more vitamins, and a whole lot less carbohydrates and heavy calorie stuff.

Finally, the balance you need to help deal with your bipolar disorder is to be found on exercise. Listen; there cannot be any compromising here. If you are going to heal and stay healed of bipolar disorder, you cannot be too carefree about your exercise regimen. Days that you don’t work out may generally spoil the entire program. It’s not a lot of options, but keep these three up, and you will find one day that you have not even had a manic or depressive spell for years.

Prevent the recurrence of bipolar disorder episodes is the best way known to man to treat the condition. Interestingly, a lot of progress has been made in this regard. There are medications that when taken at the right time, can cause the symptoms to stay off. They have side effects, but these are being worked on and should be perfected soon.

When you suffer from bipolar disorder, you are going to have to work on efficient management of the syndrome hand in hand with your physician. They will show you how to take the medication, and supervise your first few applications of it. Once that is done, you are on your own unless you have complications.

There are nascent symptoms of bipolar disorder too that need to be treated in a hurry before they become not so nascent. Of course it is possible even for you the sufferer to miss them, and you may need supervision by a professional so as not to miss them. Once they are

The disease known as bipolar disorder or manic-depressive syndrome has another nickname. This designate is ‘That Fine Madness.’ It was a soubriquet coined by anthropologist Jo Ann C. Gutin as the title for an article she wrote back in October 1996 issue of the Discover Magazine, in which she attempted to lay rest to speculations that there had to be a link between creativity and the disease known as bipolar disorder.

It is easy, just considering the thought of it to discard the idea as nothing more than living cloud-cuckoo-land. I mean, how can you say that someone as creative as say Leonardo da Vinci, who’s works still inspire a lot of people to do great thing in the world today had to be a bit wacko on the head? How would you explain that some of the greatest minds that ever lived were only deluded, and it was out of their delusions that they were able to do the great things that they achieved in their lifetimes? Yet the markers are there.

Lord Byron was one of the greatest poetic minds that ever lived, during his time on earth in the 19th century and doing a great deal to further the Romantic Movement. He was alleged to suffer from bipolar disorder, as was American poet Anne Sexton who died in 1974 at her own hands after what was widely known as a deeply troubled life that bordered on madness.

Virginia Woolf was the British novelist, essayist and critique who also took her own life after leaving behind a note that clearly indicated the depth of suffering she must have had in her mind. Ernest Hemmingway was arguably even more popular, a novelist and short-story writer of American origins who impacted modern literature in no small way. And then there were Tchaikovsky, and Sergey Rachmaninoff, composers of repute in their time; and painters Amedeo Modigliani and Jackson Pollock. These were all great minds that were well known and deeply troubled in some way, yet the works of their hands speak for themselves.

It is a general consensus that creativity comes at times of inspiration, which would suggest, if these famous people suffered from bipolar disorder, that it would be mostly during the manic episodes of their suffering that they created some of their best works of art. Also, some artistes are well known to only be able to ‘create’ when they are depressed, while they are loud about it at other times.

The tentative hypothesis of some is that ‘That Fine Madness’ that these famous people suffered from somehow prompted them to be creative, although there are people who think it is the other way round. Results from various researches and experiments are inconclusive because they point in both directions. Basically, there are too many people with bipolar disorder who are far from creative, and there are too many creative people who do not suffer from manic-depression.

If I may offer a suggestion, I would say that it’s different strokes for different folks. Great minds are great minds because they dare to go places that other people fear to tread, in mind and in body. And whereas several of them get away with it, several others pay the ultimate prize” either in mind or in body. Following the findings by anthropologist Jo Ann C. Gutin, there is definitely a link between greatness and madness somewhere; we just don’t know what it is yet.

Because bipolar disorder looks at some point like so many of the other types of depression that there are, it is easy to mistake it for any of them. This is a critical error that you are going to have to do everything in your power to avoid because the wrong treatments for bipolar disorder can very well be fatal.

There is a strong genetic link in the cause of bipolar disorder, as proven by various experiments that have been done in the course of research for on the condition. It has been proven that children tend to inherit depressive traits from their parents, which could eventually cause them to have bipolar disorder.

However, there is more than just genetics that causes bipolar disorder. For a fact, certain environmental factors such as stress and social conditions tend to have a strong influence on the incidence of the disease.

Added to that there are personal factors such as experiences, which you may have had at some point in your life that could cause you to have bipolar disorder. For instance, you may have experienced a horrible failure at some time in your life, you may have suffered the loss of a loved one at a time when you were emotionally vulnerable, or you may have been bullied or abused at a time when you could not protect yourself. All of these factors definitely can cause you to suffer from bipolar disorder.

Treatments for bipolar disorder have got to be able to address these things, but you have got to be careful too. For instance, you cannot just rush off and get yourself some traditions antidepressants for medication when you are suffering from a depressive episode. What that will likely result in is the switching of your phase to a manic one, or the onset of a rapid cycle of mania and depression.

The same works the other way round if went and used mania drugs on a manic phase of bipolar disorder. You could switch to depression, or into rapid manic-depressive cycles.

Because there really isn’t a cure in the sense of cure for bipolar disorder, the best you can hope for by way of treatment are natural remedies. You should take on the other treatments that are made available by hospital treatments. For instance, you totally should have a mood stabilizer like lithium or valproate close to you. Carbamezepine, which is sold as Tegretol, is also great for dealing with mania but you know what the risks are.

Best-case scenario in your treatment of bipolar disorder, you need some serious psychotherapy along with whatever other medication you are taking. What it boils down to is that the treatments aren’t enough by medications alone; you are going to have to learn to get a grip on your emotions or they are going to do you in.

Most doctors will only attempt to treat you for manic-depressive illness when they know what triggers set your episodes off. Since these triggers differ one from the other in different patients, it is often a meticulous process to find them out because you are yourself likely unaware of them. You are going to have to be patient, patient.

The mood swings that you experience when you suffer from bipolar affective disorder do not just come out of the blue, contrary to what you may think. These feelings come from certain triggers that are in the environment around you, or actually in your mind. You are going to have to identify them; otherwise the disease will win each time every time.

Certain words in conversation may trigger an episode of depression in a bipolar disorder patient. They may not even be aware of what is happening, but you who are having a talk with them ought to notice the differences. You are going to have to find ways to help them when that happens, or you will both pay for it.

The frequency with which a bipolar disorder patient comes across a trigger for the different phases of the disease often determines how badly they suffer from the condition. If the triggers are constant in their minds or their environment, they may have trouble ever living a normal life at all. That puts the onus on you, their friend, to do what you must to help them.

Bipolar disorder triggers can vary from one sufferer of the disease to the other, but they are often though not always related to experiences that they have had. For the most part, when you have something in your past that has ever caused you deep sadness, anytime your mind wonders to it, it could trigger a depressive episode of your bipolar disorder.

I really don’t know another bipolar disorder trigger that is as potent as stress. The phenomenon does not even have a favorite end to what it does to the sufferer. It could head you off into a depressive state, or one of mania, and it would not matter which. When you find that your stress levels are climbing, you may want to do something to relieve them.

Many people whom are depressive for any reason end up drinking a whole lot. As a result, it is not long before their minds or their subconscious begin to make the connection. As a consequence, when they drink too much alcohol, it could trigger off a phase of depression in them, which is that much worse when they suffer from bipolar disorder.

There are times when the symptoms of bipolar disorder are so quick upon you that you tend to have little or no normal functioning in between the varied episodes or phases of the condition. The only way to keep something like this in check is to be able to catch and address these symptoms with care at their onset, or you will miss them… and pay for it.

It is not very often that swings between mania and depression occur over a period of days for a sufferer of bipolar disorder, but it does happen. Those are perhaps the easiest case of the disease to diagnose because the symptoms of both extremes of it are so glaring and contrasting. Then treatment can be quickly sought.

You have to understand bipolar disorder; otherwise you will never be able to deal with it the way it needs to be deal with. And it does not matter that you are the patient or their friend; what counts it that you are involved. Whatever it costs you, learn about the symptoms of it, and see that you are able to take a helping stand as the crises set in.

The main symptoms of bipolar disorder are the mania and the depression that take you over one after the other in often lengthy intervals. Be careful you do not mistake them for your personality traits because then you would hurt yourself and think that everything is ok, which they are not.

Sometimes, bipolar disorder does not come in the conventional way. Sometimes, you may experience a major depression from time to time and then simple or hypo manic episodes in between. In some other instances, the reverse is the case. You should know that one is no less deadly than the other, so deal with them appropriately.

Episodes of a milder mania than the depressive state of the disease are often associated with certain forms of bipolar disorder. When this happens, you may spend long terms feeling useless about yourself and about life, and shorter whiles feeling excited about everything. It is still bipolar disorder, and it still has to be addressed aggressively.

There is a type of bipolar disorder called cyclothymic disorder. This is the form of the manic-depressive illness that is characterized by mood alternates between mild depression and mild mania. It does not seem to be too severe, so few people take serious not of it, either in themselves or in others. But it can get a lot worse.

Bipolar disorder has been known to follow a seasonal pattern on occasion. You feeling bright and breezy all throughout spring and summer, and feeling wretched all through winter characterize this kind of the disease. As a matter of fact, it is not too rare in the United States today, so watch out for it in your loved ones.
